The most transformative projects aren't always driven by the largest budgets; they're driven by the strongest ideas.

Partnering with GTA General Contractors in a Design-Build collaboration, SDI Design was initially commissioned to deliver a modest workplace refresh consisting of new flooring, fresh paint, and LED lighting upgrades. Rather than viewing the project as a cosmetic renovation, we challenged the brief and asked a simple question: How could the same investment deliver far greater value?

By strategically reducing the renovation footprint by nearly 50%, resources were redirected toward high-impact experiences that transformed the workplace without increasing the approved capital budget.
Inspired by Mattel's mission to inspire imagination, creativity, and play, the headquarters was reimagined as an immersive brand experience where storytelling, collaboration, and human connection are woven into everyday work life. Branding became part of the architecture itself, creating an environment that celebrates the company's culture while strengthening employee engagement.

A defining feature of the project is the arrival experience, a flexible brand activation gallery inspired by contemporary retail environments. Designed to evolve with product launches, seasonal campaigns, and employee initiatives, it transforms reception into a dynamic destination that reinforces Mattel's identity while creating memorable first impressions. Throughout the workplace, underutilized areas were reimagined as collaborative hubs, social destinations, and wellness-focused amenities, including a fitness centre, wellness room, prayer room, and inclusive spaces that support a diverse and evolving workforce.

The result is far more than a workplace refresh. It is a strategic transformation that demonstrates how thoughtful design can maximize investment, strengthen culture, elevate the employee experience, and create lasting value, proving that exceptional design is measured not by how much you spend, but by the impact it creates.
