Ambrosia Natural Foods ▪ Vaughan

Location: Vaughan, ON
Completed: 2011
Size: 10,500 SF

Every brand evolution needs a starting point. For Ambrosia Natural Foods, that moment came with its Vaughan flagship: the first expression of a completely reimagined retail identity and the foundation for a new generation of growth.

Working with Ambrosia while at Perennial, SDI Design Principal and Retail Practice Lead Mardi Najafi led the development of a comprehensive brand refresh and new store concept, translating the values of the family-owned natural foods retailer into a distinctive, approachable, and scalable physical experience.

The ambition extended well beyond the design of a single store. The Vaughan flagship became the testing ground for a complete retail kit-of-parts, establishing the material palette, departmental identities, signage, merchandising principles, fixtures, environmental graphics, and customer touchpoints that together created a recognizable new language for the Ambrosia brand.

At the heart of the concept was a simple idea: healthy living should feel accessible. The design moved away from the niche perception traditionally associated with natural food stores, creating an environment that was warm, contemporary, easy to navigate, and educational without feeling intimidating. Clear departmental organization, intuitive wayfinding, abundant product visibility, and approachable messaging helped customers confidently explore everything from organic produce and natural foods to vitamins, supplements, wellness, and personal care.

Equally important was balancing health and wellness with Ambrosia’s longstanding commitment to value. Rather than positioning natural products as exclusive or premium by default, the environment reinforced the idea that making healthier choices could be practical, attainable, and part of everyday life.

The Vaughan flagship ultimately became more than a new store, it established the design framework for Ambrosia’s next chapter. Following its completion, the brand used the retail guidelines and kit-of-parts developed through the project as the foundation for its continued expansion, growing to five locations across the Greater Toronto Area while maintaining a consistent and recognizable customer experience.

More than fifteen years later, that original design thinking continues to evolve with the brand. Ambrosia’s newest location in Toronto’s Leslieville neighbourhood brings the established retail language into a more compact urban format, demonstrating the longevity of a design system conceived not for a single moment, but to adapt, grow, and remain relevant over time.
